Overview

Climate change and environmental degradation are among the greatest threats to sustainable development in Burundi. Increasing droughts, floods, deforestation, soil erosion, and loss of biodiversity are undermining livelihoods, food security, and community resilience—particularly for vulnerable populations.

Our Environment and Climate Program responds to these challenges through community-led, climate-resilient, and nature-based solutions. We work to protect ecosystems, strengthen livelihoods, and empower communities to adapt to climate change while contributing to global environmental goals.

Our approach aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and international climate priorities, ensuring that local action contributes to global impact.

What We Do

We design and implement integrated environmental and climate initiatives that combine ecosystem protection, climate resilience, and sustainable livelihoods.

Our key areas of action include:

Climate Change Adaptation & Mitigation

Supporting communities to adapt to climate impacts while reducing environmental degradation.

Reforestation & Ecosystem Restoration

Restoring degraded land through tree planting, agroforestry, and watershed protection.

Climate-Smart Agriculture

Promoting sustainable farming practices that increase food security and protect natural resources.

Renewable Energy & Clean Technologies

Expanding access to solar energy and clean cooking solutions to reduce deforestation and emissions.

Waste Management & Circular Economy

Reducing pollution through community-based waste collection, recycling, and environmental awareness.

Environmental Education & Community Awareness

Building knowledge and leadership for long-term environmental stewardship.

Who This Program Serves

Our Environment and Climate Program prioritizes communities that are most vulnerable to climate and environmental shocks, including:

  • Rural and farming communities
  • Women and girl mothers
  • Youth and unemployed young people
  • Orphans and vulnerable children
  • Persons with disabilities
  • Faith-based and community leaders

By focusing on inclusive participation, we ensure that environmental solutions also promote equity, dignity, and social inclusion.

Our Impact and Why It Matters

Our work generates measurable environmental and social impact:

  • Restored degraded land and improved soil fertility
  • Increased climate resilience for farming households
  • Reduced pressure on forests through clean energy solutions
  • Creation of green jobs and sustainable livelihoods
  • Improved food security and household incomes
  • Increased community awareness and environmental leadership

Why it matters:

  • Healthy ecosystems are essential for food, water, and livelihoods
  • Climate resilience reduces humanitarian crises and poverty
  • Environmental protection today safeguards future generations
  • Local climate action contributes to global climate goals

Investing in environment and climate is not only about nature—it is about people, resilience, and sustainable development.

Environment & Climate in Action

Our program translates strategy into action through practical, community-driven projects such as:

  • Community-led reforestation and tree nursery initiatives
  • Climate-smart agriculture and agroforestry projects
  • Solar energy installations for schools and health centers
  • Clean cooking stove distribution for vulnerable households
  • Youth-led recycling and waste management initiatives
  • Environmental education campaigns and climate leadership training

Each initiative is designed with clear indicators, community ownership, and long-term sustainability, ensuring that impact continues beyond project funding.

By empowering communities to protect their environment and adapt to climate change, we are building a more resilient, equitable, and sustainable future for Burundi.
