Overview
Access to healthcare remains one of the most urgent challenges for vulnerable populations in Burundi. Many individuals are detained in hospitals due to unpaid medical fees, elderly people lack consistent care, and families are forced to delay or abandon treatment because of poverty.
EXODUS FOUNDATION responds by providing practical, dignity-centred health support that removes financial and social barriers to care. Our work focuses on enabling access to treatment, supporting elderly people living in poverty, and working alongside hospitals to ensure that no one is left behind because they cannot pay.
What We Do
Hospital Support & Medical Access
We support indigent patients who are unable to pay hospital fees, helping them access treatment and facilitating discharge once care is completed. This includes covering consultation costs, medication, surgery fees, and hospitalization charges in collaboration with healthcare facilities.
Medical Referrals & Specialized Care
For cases requiring advanced or specialized treatment, we assist with referrals to higher-level facilities, including regional or international medical centers when necessary. Our role is to help remove logistical and financial barriers that prevent patients from receiving life-saving care.
Elderly Care & Assistance
Older persons living in poverty often face neglect, isolation, and untreated health conditions. We provide targeted support to elderly individuals through medical assistance, basic needs support, regular follow-ups, and social visits that restore dignity and human connection.
Hygiene & Preventive Support
We distribute hygiene kits and basic health supplies to patients, elderly individuals, and vulnerable households to reduce health risks and promote basic preventive care, particularly where access to sanitation products is limited.
Who This Program Serves
- Indigent hospital patients detained due to unpaid medical bills
- Elderly people living alone or in extreme poverty
- Individuals with chronic or severe illnesses requiring long-term or specialized care
- Vulnerable households unable to afford basic healthcare and hygiene products
Support is provided based on vulnerability assessments and referrals from hospitals, community leaders, and local networks.
Our Impact & Why It Matters
Our health and elderly care work produces immediate and tangible outcomes:
- Patients are able to receive treatment and leave hospitals with dignity
- Elderly individuals regain access to care, basic support, and social connection
- Families are relieved from impossible medical debts
- Hospitals are supported in managing indigent cases more effectively
Beyond individual cases, this work strengthens trust between communities and healthcare institutions and contributes to more humane health systems.
Health in Action
Behind every statistic is a human story. Our health and elderly care program is grounded in real situations — hospital rooms, family homes, and community spaces — where timely support makes the difference between despair and recovery.
